On January 22nd 2015, Leadership Initiative for http://sportzonabrasil.com.br/palpites-basquete Transformation and Empowerment (LITE-Africa) organised a kick-off meeting for a project entitled “Promoting Effective Niger Delta Institutions through Improved Social Accountability” (PENDISA).
In order to ensure that security operatives http://www.sportzonabrasil.com.br/palpites-basquete in Niger Delta carryout their lawful duties within the purview of Human Rights framework, Leadership Initiative for Transformation and Empowerment (LITE-Africa) organised a two-day capacity building training on Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPs) for security personnel’s.
In its bid to ensure that Niger Delta communities participate actively in promoting a peaceful and credible 2015 elections, Leadership Initiative for Transformation and Empowerment (LITE-Africa), has embarked on a civic and voters education for rural communities in the state.
The VPs Accountability project funded by the Catholic Organization for Relief and Development Aid (CORDAID) is a one year project (October2013-September 2014) with an overall goal to strengthen the Nigeria CSO Coalition on Business and Human Rights to build and enforce measures of corporate https://www.sportzonabrasil.com.br/palpites-basquete accountability, including increasing state practices on business and human rights principles and standards and ensuring the Nigerian government and Oil companies commits to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. The major Objectives of the project are:
- To Increase the awareness of the VPs and provide a platform for engagement in Nigeria through trainings and workshops
- To enhance advocacy skills of community members and CSOs to persuade oil companies and the Federal Government to sign up to and operationalize the VPs.
LITE-Africa as part of its Oxfam Novib Livelihood and Governance (ONLAG) project has commissioned three cassava and one oil processing facility in Aviara and Enwhe community in Isokoh LGA and Ayama and Zarama community in Yenegoa LGA to provide alternate source of livelihood to women in these communities. This was made possible through a generous support from Oxfam Novib as part of the 5 year efforts in enhancing socio economic and political participation of women in decision making in the Niger Delta.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by representatives of Oxfam Novib, Chairman of Yenegoa LGA, Programme Manager Agricultural Development Programme (ADP), Women Cooperative Members as well as other Community leaders.
This report presents the outcome and results of the VPs Call to Action Conference hosted by the Leadership Initiative for Transformation and Empowerment (LITE Africa) in collaboration with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) titled ‘Promoting Investment and Security in the Extractive Sector through multi-stakeholder initiatives’ held in Abuja, Nigeria on 26 February, 2014. This event attracted over 50 participants comprising of representatives of strategic government agencies, CSOs, members of diplomatic community, trade union associations, representatives of oil bearing communities and the media. It was the first ever VPs national advocacy event of this scale at which oil producing community members were invited and participated actively. On the 13th and 16th December 2014, LITE-Africa hosted a football for peace competition in Uvwie and Oshimili South LGAs respectively in Delta State. The event is an integral part the Strengthening Youth Engagement in Development (SYED) project which seeks to address youth involvement in violent behaviour by working to enhance youth ability to manage conflict towards ensuring long-term stabiliy and economic development in the Niger Delta. SYED is funded by the US Department of States through Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN).
LITE-Africa with a team of experts in business and human rights are facilitating this 3-Day International Certificate Courses for individuals interested in increasing their knowledge of business and human rights in sub-Saharan Africa. LITE-Africa has many years of experience of conducting trainings on Business and Human Rights in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria and has specifically designed this training course to address how businesses should operate under a Human Rights Framework in sub-Saharan Africa.
Leadership Initiative for Transformation and Empowerment (LITE-Africa) has been involved in the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) processes with Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) providing mentoring and oversight support to two Regional Development Councils (RDC); Egbema Gbramatu Community Development Council (EGCDC) and KEFFES Regional Development Council (KRDC).
